FIRST was founded by Dean Kamen in 1989 with the intention of inspiring youth interest and participation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. (STEM) The first ever FIRST competition was held in a New Hampshire high school gym in 1992. Only 28 teams participated that year. Today, the competition is held around the world with over 250,000 students.

Our mission is to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders, by engaging them in exciting mentor based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self confidence, communication, and leadership.
